What it is

Alternative overdraft, explained.

An alternative overdraft, also called a revolving credit facility or business line of credit, gives you an approved limit to draw from as needed. Each drawing is repaid over a set period, and as you repay, that amount is available to use again.

Unlike a bank overdraft, it sits outside your current account and comes from a specialist lender. Costs depend on the lender and how much you draw, and some lenders charge a fee to set up or keep the facility.

Who it suits

  • Businesses with uneven cash flow or seasonal swings
  • Paying suppliers or buying stock ahead of sales
  • A safety net for unexpected costs
  • Businesses that have lost or outgrown a bank overdraft

Good to know

Alternative overdraft, answered.

How is this different from a bank overdraft?

It works in a similar way, a limit you draw from and repay, but it comes from a specialist lender rather than your bank and sits outside your current account.

Do I pay for the facility if I do not use it?

It depends on the lender. Some charge only on what you draw, and others charge a fee to set up or keep the facility open. Your broker explains the costs before you go ahead.

How long do I have to repay each drawing?

Each drawing is repaid over a set term, commonly up to 12 months on our panel, and the repaid amount can then be drawn again.

Is it secured?

Most alternative overdrafts are unsecured, although lenders usually ask the directors for a personal guarantee. Larger facilities can be secured.

Will checking my options affect my credit score?

No. Seeing your options does not involve a credit search. A lender only runs its own checks, with your permission, if you decide to apply.

Is Kyma the lender?

No. Kyma Business Finance is a credit broker, not a lender. We source options from lenders across the whole of the market and take your application to the lender you choose.
