What it is

Asset finance, explained.

Asset finance spreads the cost of an asset over its working life rather than paying for it in one go. With hire purchase you own the asset after the final payment. With leasing you pay to use it for a set term. Lenders can also release cash from equipment you already own.

Because the asset is the security, asset finance can be simpler to arrange than an unsecured loan. New and used assets can both be financed, depending on the lender and the age of the asset.

Who it suits

  • Businesses buying vehicles, plant, machinery or equipment
  • Firms that want to keep cash in the business
  • New and used assets, and with some lenders private sales
  • Releasing cash from assets you already own

Good to know

Asset finance, answered.

What is the difference between hire purchase and leasing?

With hire purchase you own the asset once the final payment is made. With a lease the lender owns the asset and you pay to use it for the term, with options at the end that depend on the lease.

Do I need a deposit?

Some lenders ask for a deposit and some can fund the full cost. It depends on the asset, its age and your business.

Can I finance used equipment?

Often, yes. Many lenders fund used vehicles and machinery, with limits on how old the asset can be by the end of the term.

Can I buy from a private seller?

Some lenders on our panel fund private sales, while others need an invoice from a dealer or manufacturer.

What can I finance?

Vans, cars and lorries, plant and machinery, IT and phones, medical and dental equipment, catering and shop fit outs, solar panels and EV chargers, and prestige cars, among others.

Will checking my options affect my credit score?

No. Seeing your options does not involve a credit search. A lender only runs its own checks, with your permission, if you decide to apply.
